At any given time, one out of every three of us in the U.S. suffers from a skin disease--and athletes are particularly vulnerable.
According to a survey, 56 percent of infectious diseases in competitive sports, from high school to pro level, are skin diseases. Some, like MRSA, a flesh-eating staph infection, can be very serious and contagious.
With many sport season beginning, the National Athletic Trainers' Association seeks to combat the number of cases that could potentially arise. They have released new guidelines that will hopefully cut down the number of skin illnesses popping up in athletes.
The main guidelines include:
-maintain clean equipment and locker rooms daily
-wash after every practice or competition
-educate your players
-discourage athletes from sharing gear
