If you're in the mood for a large Coke or Mountain Dew--don't go looking for one in New York City.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to prohibit the sale of large sodas--those over 16 ounces--and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters, sports venues and street carts. This ban would go into effect next year, and would apply to bottled drinks as well as fountain sodas.
The mayor says sugary drinks have led to rising obesity rates for New Yorkers. Those opposed argue that the mayor is turning the city into a nanny state.
The city's Board of Health will have to approve the proposal before the city can move ahead with it. If it passes, NYC will be the first city in the nation to implement such a ban.
