Preferring to remain blissful ignorant as to just just how many calories are in that Sausage McMuffin you sometimes grab on the way to work?
Like it or not, you're about to know exactly how many calories you're getting out of your McDonald's trip.
Starting Monday, every McDonald's menu nationwide, whether it's the drive-thru or inside, will include calorie counts for each item listed.
The change is an attempt by the fast food chain to remain ahead of a new federal regulation coming as early as next year. As part of the president's health care plan, federal law will require restaurants with more than 20 locations to post calorie counts.
McDonald's president, Jan Fields, says the company is doing this voluntarily, hoping it will better educate customers. She doesn't expect the change to impact sales, saying that in cities where the publication of calories is already required, there was little change in the items people were ordering.
"When it's all said and done, the menu mix doesn't change," she said. "But I do think people feel better knowing this information."
McDonald's has also been trying to implement healthier items to their menu, including offering chocolate milk with Happy Meals and introducing a new Egg McMuffin made with egg whites and a whole grain muffin.
Similar fast food giants such as Burger King, Taco Bell and KFC have no plans to add calorie counts to their menus unless directed by the federal government.
