From jogging to biking, folks in Colorado know about healthy living. We run, hike, get out with our dogs, and hit up the local farmer’s market.
But we may not know anything compared to A.J. Jacobs. He's the author of “Drop Dead Healthy.” It’s a book chronicling his journey to become the healthiest man alive.
You can imagine how intimidating it would be to figure out where to start. But A.J. was on a mission.
“I needed this, because three years ago I was in terrible shape,” he said. “I was what they call skinny-fat, so I looked like a snake that had swallowed a goat. And my wife said to me, 'listen, I don't want to be a widow in my 40s. You have to get in shape.'”
A.J. focused on two areas first. He started with his diet, working on the quality of his food and the quantity. Then, A.J. got moving, trying all different kinds of workouts.
He revamped his whole life, following medical advice that improved his sleep, his sex life, his posture and lowering his stress level. It became a full-time job.
“If you're following all the advice, there's no time for anything else,” he said.
But A.J. kept one goal in mind. He says you have to think about your future self.
“I want my 70-year-old self to be around for my kids,” he said. “So I actually made a 70-year-old picture of myself -- at 70 -- and I put it on my wall. Alright, I'm gonna do it for this guy.”
But the question is: did he meet his goal of becoming the healthiest person in the world?
“I don't want to say I'm the healthiest person,” he said. “As soon as I say that -- I'm going to get rickets. But I feel better than I've ever felt in my life. I've got double the energy. And I just feel very lucky.”
