Gov. John Hickenlooper has signed a state bill to make synthetic drugs, called bath salts, illegal. The law makes distributing, manufacturing or selling “bath salts” a class three felony.
Before Thursday, bath salts were legal. They can produce a stimulant like effect and leave abusers with symptoms similar to cocaine, amphetamine and methamphetamine. Because the drug is synthetic, it is not detected by many routine drug screens.
The bill's sponsor, state Rep. J. Paul Brown, says bath salts are often sold or used with other drugs. “They are inexpensive, accessible, hard to detect and devastate lives.”
