WASHINGTON (AP) -- A coalition of health and education groups says young elementary school students should use the proper names for body parts. And, by the fifth grade, they say they should know that sexual orientation is "the romantic attraction of an individual to someone of the same gender or a different gender."
That's according to new, non-binding recommendations released Monday. The organizations include the American Association of Health Education and the American School Health Association.
The recommendations to states and school districts seek to encourage discussions about sex, bullying and healthy relationships when they say they are age appropriate.
Experts say schools across America are inconsistent in how they tackle such topics.
