The Springs community banded together Saturday to help send a young cancer patient to the East Coast for what her family hopes will be a cure.

A community yard sale was held Saturday, June 4 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Maizeland Moors Center on Academy and Maizeland in Colorado Springs. All of the money is going towards 19-year-old Desiree's treatment.

Calandra Morgan faced every parents' nightmare four years ago when she took her daughter to the doctor for what she thought was a twisted knee, only to find out it's something much, much more serious: cancer.

The family has faced many setbacks in looking for a cure.

Calandra Morgan took Desiree to the doctor after she fell on her knee. That’s when doctors discovered she had a tumor. "Any cancer diagnose is devastating and its even more so when its your own child," Calandra said.

At 15, Desiree Morgan was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer often found in teens. "I was sad, devastated. I felt like it wasn't supposed to be happening to me," Desiree said.

Four years later the cancer that started in her knee has spread into her chest. She has undergone 16 surgeries and numerous chemo treatments.

"Its hard because when you are going through chemo treatments and you see it's working and that the cancer is dying...all your lab work is good you think this is the one that works,” her mom said.

But so far- nothing has worked very long.

For the third time Desiree's cancer has returned. Now her family is hoping a specialized treatment in New York will be the answer. But the trip is going to add to their already mounting medical bills. That's when family and friends stepped in.

"I have high hopes about going to New York because I'm ready to start feeling good again. I'm ready to be myself," Desiree said.

Desiree travels to New York this week to begin treatment.
