Flu season has returned to El Paso County, as the first case requiring hospitalization was reported Monday.

According to El Paso County Public Health, a child has been hospitalized. No further information about the case has been released.

"This reported hospitalization serves as a reminder of the seriousness of flu," Kandi Buckland, executive director of EPCPH, said in a statement.

EPCPH advises everyone over the age of 6 months to get a flu vaccination.

"We expect to see an increase in flu activity throughout the holidays, and encourage everyone to get vaccinated and be conscientious about practicing flu prevention behaviors," Buckland said.

Those over 65 and younger than 2 are at the highest risk of developing complications from the flu, as are pregnant women and people with medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes.

Call the Pikes Peak United Way at 211 for information on a flu clinic near you.

One hundred and twenty-three people in El Paso County were hospitalized during the 2010-2011 flu season (Oct. 3, 2010 through May 21, 2011).
