What's Going Around - December 15, 2009

Updated: Tue 11:27 PM, Dec 15, 2009

It's the season for colds and flu. But what seems like a cold may not be. That's according to Dr. Tom Bartlett with Mountain View Medical Group. He's seeing lots of sinusitis in his office.

It presents with cold symptoms like nasal congestion, fever, cough and facial pain. He says it can last for weeks. And if it does, Dr. Bartlett says it can turn from viral to bacterial. At that point you could need steroids, antibiotics and nasal saline irrigation.

So the best advice is to talk to your healthcare provider about your symptoms so you can determine the best course of treatment for you.

Also going around this week is an illness affecting kids... croup. That's happening in the southwest part of town according to Dr. Steven Reich with Colorado Springs Health Partners.
He's seeing more of it in older kids.

Croup is usually part of a cold or a viral infection. Your child will have a hoarse voice and a tight, low-pitched "barking" cough. It's usually worse at night. You may also notice harsh, raspy, vibrating sounds when your child breathes.

Here's what you can do: give your child warm liquids, and cough medicine. Also, use a humidifier
and as always, if your child has trouble breathing, call your doctor immediately.
