What's Going Around - October 13, 2009

Our local doctors are busy, especially our pediatricians. Their offices are full of kids with flu-like symptoms.

In the Briargate area, Dr. Michael Halenkamp with Colorado Springs Health Partners says that's what he's seeing in his office. You're going to notice fever, headache, tiredness, dry cough, stuffy nose and muscle aches.

It's a similar scene on the southwest side of town. Dr. Steven Reich is with Colorado Springs Health Partners. He is seeing flu-like symptoms as well. But the kids he's seeing have a fever for 2-4 days in the 101-103 range. He also says they usually cough a lot. But he did tell us he's not prescribing Tami-flu, which you may know can shorten flu-symptoms. Dr. Reich says, by the time he sees the kids, it's usually too late for it to make any difference.

So if you haven't had these symptoms yet, what can you do to keep from getting it? Here's what the CDC says. First, wash your hands often with soap and water. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. And try to avoid close contact with sick people.

This is advice we can all use because the height of flu season is still months away
