Within the last two weeks, a new study was released from the New England Journal of Medicine showing that when it comes to choosing a seasonal flu vaccine for adults, going for an injection may be your best bet as opposed to the nasal spray.
So we presented that information to our local doctors to see what they had to say. They wanted to emphasize that the study focused on adults and not kids. But what's the difference between these two types of vaccine?
With the flu shot, you're injected with killed flu viruses. With flu mist, you get a live but weakened strain through the nostrils. What's not clear is why the spray would be less effective against seasonal flu.
Once again, this study focused on adults. The doctors we talked to wanted everyone to know that flu mist is still believed to be just as effective as an injection when it comes to kids. This study also does not apply to the H1N1 vaccine.
Officials with the CDC say both the H1N1 mist and the injection are expected to be effective ways to prevent the virus from spreading. That's good news since the first swine flu vaccine in our area is expected to arrive later this week and it is expected to be a flu-mist.
