Cesar Chavez Academy Closes Due To Flu Absences

A school official says almost 40 percent of the students at Cesar Chavez Academy in Colorado Springs are sick with what is presumed to be swine flu. It was open Thursday for school but Thursday afternoon, a note on the school's front door says due to absences, the school will be closed until next Wednesday.

The charter school's family support coordinator Alex Malone said at a board meeting Wednesday that five teachers and 86 of the school's 231 students were out Wednesday. That was up from 52 students who were out Monday and 69 on Tuesday.

School officials have also decided to postpone a carnival this weekend.

Because seasonal influenza has not yet been detected this year, cases of the flu are presumed to be swine flu. The El Paso County Health Department won't be testing the students, but say it is likely the H1N1 Virus.

If your child is sick with flu-like symptoms, health experts recommend that student stay home.
