It's not even fall yet, but the season may be changing already... cold season. That's what's happening on the southwest side of the Springs, according to Dr. Caroline Rowlands with Colorado Springs Health Partners.

Dr. Rowlands is seeing colds in school aged kids. Here's a look at the symptoms: nasal congestion, a cough, sometimes a fever and a sore throat. Dr. Rowlands says this is a simple cold. But the symptoms could last up to 10 days. So, treatment is directed at controlling those symptoms.

Here's what you do: Use an over-the-counter pain reliever for the fever and decongestants of cough suppressants for kids over the age of four. Dr. Rowlands also says kids with a fever should stay home from school.

Also going around this week... an illness characterized by its cough. We're talking about croup.
Croup is usually part of a cold, a viral infection and it's affecting kids in the Briargate area. That's according to Dr. Michael Halenkamp with Colorado Springs Health Partners.

He says your child will have a hoarse voice and a tight, low-pitched "barking" cough. You may also notice harsh, raspy, vibrating sounds when your child breathes. Croup can last for 5 to 6 days, usually worse at night.

Here's what you can do for mild symptoms: give your child warm liquids, and cough medicine.
Use a humidifier. And never let anyone smoke around your child, because smoke can make croup worse.

If your child has trouble breathing or swallowing, call your doctor immediately.
