Pueblo County Health Department says there are several confirmed cases of the H1N1 swine flu confirmed at three Pueblo schools.
Health department officials say five children, who attend Charles Goodnight Elementary, The Pueblo School of Arts and Sciences, and Belmont Elementary have come down with H1N1. The health department is also looking into an unconfirmed case at Swallows Charter Academy in District 70.
Those children are not at school. The schools are remaining open.
Goodnight Elementary was informed on Friday that one of their students tested positive for H1N1. About 30 kids were out sick Monday with flu-like symptoms.
Just last week, more than 100 kids were absent from PSAS. Forty-seven students stayed home sick on Monday and another 25 were sent home after developing flu-like symptoms during the day. Tuesday, a total of 90 students were absent from school, nearly a quarter of the school's population. Eight more were sent home Tuesday after showing flu-like symptoms and three students didn't attend school at all, simply because their parents didn't want them exposed to other students who may be sick. The health department says, the number of kids out sick at PSAS is significantly down from last week.
The health department says this is exactly what they expected to see now that schools are back in session. They also say the number of confirmed cases may be misleading. Because the normal flu season hasn't begun yet, if you or your child are experiencing flu symptoms it is most likely the H1N1 virus.
Dr. Chris Nevin-Woods, Public Health Dir. Pueblo City-County Health Dept. tells 11 News, "The good news is the original school PSAS, in city school district, the number of children out has decreased, so it looks like we're starting to get it under control."
Nevin-Woods also says the cases that have been confirmed in schools seem to be mild. Despite this, if you have flu symptoms you are being asked to stay home for 24 hours after your fever has broken and you are not using any fever reducing medications.
