When it comes to the cold and the flu, the symptoms are pretty similar. As we head into that time of the year... how do you know what you've come down with?

Dr. John Voth with Colorado Springs Health Partners is helping you learn about the differences between the two.

When you have a cold, you'll notice a sore throat, dry cough and a runny or stuffy nose.

When it comes to the flu, you'll recognize those same symptoms and more. You'll also have a fever, chills and overall achiness.

There is no cure for a cold or the flu. But there are some simple things you can do at home to get yourself on the mend.

First off, get some rest. Dr. Voth says inadequate rest can actually prolong your symptoms. Also, drink lots of fluid to prevent dehydration. Take Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen to help with your fever, if it's the flu. And avoid alcohol and tobacco.

Once again, Dr. Voth says the single best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated. It's not 100% effective, but it prevents against the most common flu strains. And even if you do catch the flu, if you've been vaccinated, Dr. Voth says your symptoms will be less severe and won't last as long.
