What's Going Around - July 14, 2009

Sore throats in the summer time aren’t fun, but they’re also not uncommon. What is uncommon is a sore throat turning into strep throat. But that's exactly what's happening in kids on the east side of town.

That's according to Dr. Alan Garscadden. He's with Colorado Springs Health Partners.

Strep starts with a sore throat, especially when swallowing. That can be followed by a fever or rash, a headache and even nausea.

Strep throat is a bacterial infection and it will go away on its own. But you'll be contagious for much longer. Antibiotics will help with your symptoms within about 24-hours.

As always, the best way to prevent strep from spreading is to wash your hands.
