This week has been designated as "Through With Chew Week" in an effort to call attention to the use of smokeless tobacco.

In Colorado, 7.3% of adult males use chew tobacco on a daily basis, compared to the national rate of 6%.

Among high school-age males in Colorado, approximately 12.4% currently use chew tobacco, whereas the national rate is about 10%.

Smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarettes, as some young people believe, and it is even more habit forming because it contains a higher concentration of nicotine than cigarettes.

Spit contains more than 25 different carcinogens and a variety of other toxic chemicals.

The nicotine content in a can of dip or snuff is approximately 144 milligrams, which is equal to about 80 cigarettes. In other words, one can of snuff or dip equals about four packs of cigarettes.
