The first flu case in Colorado has been confirmed and it is in El Paso County. The adult man who has been diagnosed with the flu was treated at an outpatient facility and is recovering. He did not have to be hospitalized, but it is a reminder that flu season is here.

Last year, the first confirmed case of flu wasn't found until late November. And last year was one of the worst years on record for the flu, with 152 hospitalizations and pediatric deaths in El Paso County. Last year El Paso County had the highest rate of flu infections in the state and had the largest number of hospitalization since 2003.

This year, there is plenty of flu vaccine and the CDC is recommending that all children, 6 months to 18 years be vaccinated.

In order to avoid contracting the flu, the Health Department recommends that you wash your hands with soap and water for 15 seconds, avoid contact with people who are sick, stay home if you are sick, and get a flu shot.
