Breast cancer survivors with high levels of estrogen in their blood have a greater risk of recurrence with the disease.
The research appears in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.
In the article, researchers report blood taken from women whose breast cancer returned showed high levels of estrogen. In many cases the women had been treated with estrogen blocking drugs.
The discovery suggests women who have breast cancer should take extra steps such as regular exercise and weight management to reduce their estrogen levels.
Estrogen is strongly linked with the initial development of many breast cancers.
This study is among a few that are looking at the hormone's role in cancer recurrence.
