Technology has helped society advance in countless ways, but there may be a downside to the increasing reliance on computers and smart phones.
Doctors are now saying that extended periods of time staring at computers and smart phones may lead to Computer Vision Syndrome.
Symptoms include eye fatigue, eye strain, blurred vision, headaches, dry and itchy eyes, burning eyes and tearing.
There’s not a lot most people can do about the time they spend staring at a computer screen, but there are things that can be done to help the eyes feel better.
Doctors say to follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look up and focus on something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds to allow the eyes to rest.
People blink 60 percent less than normal while at the computer, which dries out the eyes. Doctors recommend using eye drops, or concentrating on blinking more.
Lights in the room can cause glaring on the computer screen, which blurs vision. People are advised to check the lights in the room to make sure there is no glare coming off the screen.
These simple tips can go a long way towards making the eyes feel better at the end of the day.
