Senate Moves Ahead With Extended Unemployment Aid

A compromise now appears possible, to get benefits flowing again to the long-term unemployed.

The Senate today unexpectedly voted to move forward with legislation backed by the White House to renew those benefits. A half-dozen Republicans joined with Democrats on the test vote.

But Republican leaders say they'll try to make changes in the measure, so the $6.4 billion cost won't add to deficits.

The White House has insisted that the cost of the three-months of benefits doesn't need to have accompanying cuts in other programs.

Obama today rejected arguments that the benefits take away motivation to work. He says, "That really sells the American people short."
