After Super Tuesday failed to strengthen Mitt Romney as the GOP frontrunner, candidates are looking to Southern states to hopefully bring clarity to an increasingly muddled primary.
Romney, who struggled in the South in 2008, is hoping for a strong showing at Tuesday's Alabama and Mississippi primaries, to show he can win over evangelical voters. Republicans surveyed by a CBS/New York Times poll say Romney is the likely nominee, but political analysts say his limited appeal among certain demographics remains an Achilles heel.
Newt Gingrich, who has pinned his presidential hopes on Southern voters, hopes victories in both states will energize his campaign.
Rick Santorum says results from this week's primaries could lead to a two-man race if Gingrich doesn't do well. Santorum's camp says that Gingrich is dividing the conservative vote with Santorum, allowing Romney to win states he otherwise would have lost.
