Republicans have broken House Democrats' stranglehold on New England, winning a seat in New Hampshire.

Second-term Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter has been defeated by Manchester's Republican Mayor Frank Guinta. Democrats had previously held all of the House seats in New England.

Republicans have captured nine seats previously held by Democrats and are leading in more than two dozen seats around the country in their march to regain control of the House. Democrats have taken only one formerly GOP seat -- in Delaware.

Republicans need to capture 40 seats to reclaim control of the House that they lost in 2006.
