Hillary Clinton has taken time out from the campaign trail to poke fun at herself.

Appearing on NBC's "Tonight Show" Thursday night, Clinton told host Jay Leno she almost didn't make it to his studio, saying she'd been "pinned down by sniper fire." That was a reference to her since debunked claims that she had dodged sniper bullets in Bosnia. Clinton later said she "misspoke."

As Clinton came on, Leno's band played the "Rocky" theme, jumping off her statement in Philadelphia this week that she is the underdog in the Democratic nominating contest against Barack Obama, in the tradition of Rocky Balboa.

Leno asked how much sleep Clinton was getting, saying jokingly that "answering the phone at 3, that's gotta be tough." That's a reference to her campaign commercials that ask which candidate would be the best prepared for middle-of-the-night emergencies.

Clinton said "it happens every single night" and told Leno, "You've got to stop calling me."
