John McCain is launching his first TV ad for the general election.
The spot shows him imprisoned in Vietnam and calls him "the American president Americans have been waiting for."
The likely Republican nominee is taking advantage of the Democrats' ongoing battle for the nomination by defining himself before they have the chance. The commercial highlights McCain's experience and character, and calls him someone who has walked the walk when the country's safety has been on the line.
For now, it's only airing in New Mexico. Aides say they expect to expand to other states as the campaign continues.
The ad's release coincides with a biographical tour next week intended to introduce McCain to the nation through a series of speeches and visits to places that have shaped his life.
