Scammers are making threats that hit close to home and some are falling for it.
Two southern Colorado utility companies are having the same issue. Crooks are posing as utility workers, calling customers as recently as Tuesday saying there's only one way to avoid having service shut off.
The phone rings, and the demands begin. Amie Gillum has heard more than her fair share.
"[They say] you need to make a payment on your bill right now or we will disconnect your service within 24 hours," she said.
She simply hangs up, and her lights are still on.
"My bills are paid," Gillum said.
Cheron Cole, from Colorado Springs Utilities, tells 11 News other customers are being told to pay up by putting cash on a pre-paid card and handing the card over.
"We would never make a demand to a customer to make a payment on a pre-paid card," said Cole.
In Pueblo, the scam worked on a customer of Black Hills Energy. The crook even came by the victim's house to pick up the pre-paid card. Pueblo police have been notified about the scam against the Black Hills customer.
Cheron Cole works for a different company but the message is the same: If the call seems strange, call your utility provider.
“We are grateful to any customer who reports any suspicious activity going on," Cole said.
Both Black Hills and Springs Utilities encourage customers to protect their personal information over the phone. If a worker does go to a home, they will have proper identification on them. Customers who are still uncertain are encouraged to call the utilities company to confirm the visit is legitimate.
