It's a disturbing new trend in Colorado Springs: suspects using vehicles to break into local businesses.
A rash of these burglaries have broken out over the last 48 hours. Only 11 News has the surveillance video showing the crooks inside one local store.
Police could be closer to making an arrest now that they have the suspect vehicle in their possession. The vehicle was located early Friday morning near a medical marijuana dispensary that was smashed into late Wednesday on the northeast side of town.
This dispensary, Third Day Apothecary, is located on the 4800 block of North Academy near Flintridge.
The vehicle was discovered while police were responding to reports of attempted break-ins at Precious Metals, located at 317 N. Union., and Ace Pawn Loan at 3688 N. Academy.
This was the second time in two days that both businesses were targeted; both times the suspects used the same tactic--driving into the building--to gain entry.
Only 11 News has the surveillance video from inside the Ace Pawn Loan showing four people smash in displays and steal from the shop. A family run business for decades, we talked to manager Derrick White about the break-ins.
"It’s just really hard on us because it is a family run business and we are doing all the repairs ourselves and seeing what we can do," White said.
White had a feeling these crooks would come back.
"I know for a fact they only came back b/c it was probably going to be easier entry and they thought it was going to be that they could walk out with more," White said.
Ace Pawn has already started increasing their security and taking steps to avoid any other situations like the ones they’ve experienced in the last two days.
"We boarded it up and we're actually reconstructing and reinforcing the inside stronger so the outer shell is weaker but the inside is much much stronger," White told us.
Once officers realized that the suspects were returning to previous crime scenes, they set up surveillance at Third Day Apothecary in anticipation of the suspects returning there as well.
At 3:14 a.m., the suspect vehicle was spotted near the dispensary. Officers tried to pull the vehicle over; when the suspects refused to stop, a police chase began. The suspects eventually crashed their truck into a parked car and then took off running, leaving behind their vehicle.
The suspect vehicle is a dark blue Nissan Titan. Police say the vehicle was reported stolen. Additional details have not been provided at this time.
Police ask that anyone with information on these crimes call the Police Department, or call Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP to remain anonymous.
