Police: Anti-Gay Slurs Escalate Into Violence

A confrontation at a local restaurant early Saturday morning put one man in the hospital.

Police are now searching for multiple suspects, who officers believe instigated the fight over how the victim was dressed. Lt. Rigdon with the Colorado Springs Police Department tells 11 News that the suspect could face felony charges for a "biased-motivated" crime.

Officers say that a group of seven started throwing anti-gay slurs at the victim when he and a few friends walked into the Albertacos on Austin Bluffs Parkway just before 3 a.m. The verbal attack then escalated into a physical fight, landing the victim in the hospital with a facial fracture. No other serious injuries have been reported.

By the time police arrived at the scene, the suspects had left the restaurant.

All of the people involved in the altercation are reportedly in their early 20s, but Rigdon does not believe the two groups know each other. Police have been unable to gather all of the suspect descriptions at this time, but say that the group consisted of five black men and two black women. One of the men is reportedly 5-foot-5, 135 pounds and bald, while another man has been described as 5-foot-10, thin and light-skinned.

If the fight is determined to be biased-motivated, and more than one member of the group is found to be involved in the assault, some or all of the suspects could face class 4 felony charges. A biased-motivated crime is typically a class 5 felony charge unless the offender was assisted. The suspects also face second-degree assault charges.

Anyone with further information about this incident are asked to contact police. For those who wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP or text TIP411.

It is unfortunate that they locked the doors instead of offering help. They are probably illegals and were afraid of being deported. When you place a food order there in English they can barely understand. They could have called 911, they could have opened the doors and let the ones getting attacked back in. They could have done alot of things, but they chose not to. You and your friends needs to sue! I had a friend who was trying to stop a fight outside of an establishment and was severely hurt. He was awarded $3,000,000 because he suffered life long injuries, and no one at the establishment help him. Give it a shot. @ Mr X You are a menace to society. Good thing not everyone thinks like you. I am surprised that KKTV still lets you make comments on here. The victims tried to leave and the attackers followed them outside. You are a selfish jerk. If you don't know the whole story...don't comment!!! Obviously innocent human lives mean nothing to you!

They could have atleast called the cops instead on standing there watching 2 people i know very well out of the 4 get beat senseless. Im sorry I thought there was still good people out there who helped people there and cared for each other, I must be wrong. Maybe only the first responders, military and civil service are left to care for other.

Ummmm maybe because they didnt want to get involved??? Why keep the doors open so the victims can go inside the establishment and cause potential harm to the workers there? Any of them want to be dragged into this drama and be expected to put their well-being on the line? If you expected them to that's pretty selfish. They were only protecting themselves and wanted to be no part of a potential life threatening situation. Cant expect them to subject themselves to an incident they weren't a part of. How selfish can you be Chris?

My question is how come the employees of albertacos arent being charged for locking the door on my friends while this attacked happened and stood there and watch. This makes me so upset that people are that ingorent to each other.

I bet one of the black chicks got mad because one of the gay dudes turned her down. Thats probably what started it. I agree with the guy that recommended concealed carry. Its a sad state when that's what it takes to be able to go out in public to get a bite to eat without getting jumped.

One more thing. This article prompts me to share a childhood story. Long, long ago in a Jr. High far, far away. Me and my friends were on luch recess playing basketball when a group of Mexican/hispanics started picking a fight with us. We fought for only a few seconds to a minute before it was broken up by teachers. Later when we were in front of the assistant principal. She told us how my friends and I were being suspended for using "racial slurs." That's the time when I lost my cool! The other kids were not even in trouble! The fact that they started it and took it "racial" even before us was irrelavant. When I asked my assistant principal why they aren't in the same trouble for "racial slurs" she told me, and I quote. "Bobby, it dosen't matter because we're the majiority and they're the minority." I will never forget that. Extreme Feminists, Blacks, all kinds of Hispanics and oh yes Homosexuals have been playing that card and winning since the 1980's...

Let me premise by saying I hate these wild packs of hoods in this town just as much as the next person. Nevertheless this article really gets my goat! So the guys that beat up this guy if caught will face worse charges because the victim is gay?! So they called him names, (cause he was aparantly dressed funny) oooooooo. Gtf outa here! The fact that they did what they did is the crime. Are the authorities going to start throwing people in jail for name calling now?!
