Suspect Arrested For Robbing Pizzeria With Machete

Ten days after a Papa Murphy’s Pizza store was robbed by a suspect with a machete, police released a surveillance photo of the suspect to the public. The next morning, officers received a tip that solved the crime.

Colorado Springs police say the suspect was alone when he robbed the Papa Murphy’s at 3105 West Colorado Avenue on the afternoon of January 30. The suspect held the machete to the victim’s neck until they handed over some cash, and then the suspect ran away.

Detectives say they tried to identify the suspect on their own, but on February 9 they sent a surveillance photo to local media with a request for help from the public. The next morning, investigators received the tip that led them to an arrest.

Police say the tip led them to setup surveillance at the Paso Mobile Home Community at 15 El Paso Avenue in Manitou Springs. After a couple of hours, they spotted Howard York, 43.

York was intercepted and detained. Police say he was charged with aggravated robbery after they found factors connecting him to the crime.

Where's all the armed citizens who, when something like this happens, pipe up and say, "I wish he would've tried to rob me. He would've got a face full of Smith & Wesson." Looks like another one got by ya.

Jack, stop being a dweeb. That's not why any of us carry. There's almost 20,000 concealed carry permit holders in this county to date and the numbers are rising every day. The first thing any of us are taught is to be a good witness first. After that, the firearm only comes out if you feel like your life or someone elses life is in immediate danger. I recommend you get your permit, exercise your right and carry a firearm as well.

I work at Papa Murphys in Colorado... Me and my crew had the discussion today that if a man with a machete came in and tried to rob us we would start throwing various items at him... and he would eventually run away or be knocked out.. of course I am sure... these people were very scared.. just not everyday a store gets robbed with a machete lol.

This happened in daylight and this problem has been escalating for years. The presence of the day labor site and the abundance of MMJ establishments combined with the close proximity to the creek is making for a terrible situation. I have lived on the Westside for almost 40 years and do not ever remember things being this out of hand. Police need to step up patrols and the shopping centers need to hire guards and there needs to be a limit on how many MMJ businesses can be allowed in a particular neighborhood. I too refuse to go to any of these stores after dark - but pretty soon it won't make a difference what time of day it is.

How exactly do you think MMJ establishments cause crime? It's more likely they reduce crime! How many people are going to rob a store after getting stoned? Really?

Apparently you think the propaganda movie Reefer Madness is fact.

Shame the employees weren't armed, then the headline would read "Pizzeria Robberty Suspect Brings Knife to Gun Fight".

I think it's BS that the police did not catch this guy! I work in this shopping center. We need better protection and a quicker response! Someone got beat with a bat and mugged last week behind KFC! Whats happening to the Westside?

What's happening over there? No streetlights, that's what. I refuse to patronize any businesses along that area after dark until the lighting situation improves. Just asking for mayhem with the dark and all the nuts on the loose.

Most of the time when you call 911 these days, no one answers. They will call you back 15 mins later. I AM NOT JOKING--THIS IS ACTUALLY TRUE!

The description of the suspect matches almost half of the people in that immediate area.

Somebody else should have been armed with a gun!
