A reputable company wants to warn everyone, crooks are using their name and stealing from homes. Colorado Springs police are searching for the person or people responsible.
Total Roofing, based in Colorado Springs, has been a trusted name for years and they're angry about the situation.
This local company wants people to know they can still be trusted, but with this new scam going around, they're not sure what to do, except warn all of us.
"It's unbelievable," Total Roofing owner Scott McIntyre said.
McIntyre runs the business with his wife. They started Total Roofing seven years ago. In that time, they've secured themselves with the Better Business Bureau and the Southern Colorado community.
"It's hurtful, and it hurts my feelings that someone would do that, especially to our customers and potential customers down the road," McIntyre said.
Scammers are using the Total Roofing name to gain access into homes. Crooks have been making calls to strangers telling them they're with the company, and are in the area to give roofing estimates.
According to police, someone was burglarized Friday after taking one of these calls from the scammers.
"What if it was just more than a burglary, what if that person was home, they could've been injured. Physical things are replaceable, lives are not," McIntyre said.
McIntyre told 11 News they never conduct business in this way and wants to ensure the community--they do not make unsolicited calls or home visits.
"If you have caller ID, write it down, get a name, get a phone number but it is not us," McIntyre said.
According to police, it seems these scammers are trying to get information about when people are home, and when they're not.
There's not a lot of suspect information on this one, but if you have any information, you're asked to call Crimestoppers at 634-STOP.
