An investigation into over 60 thefts from unlocked cars in the Fountain Valley Area led police to arrest a 19-year-old for several counts.

The Fountain Police Department says the crimes occurred after sunset or overnight. Cases were reported in Cross Creek, Heritage, Tuscany Ridge, Wild Oak Farms and Countryside communities.

Officers say they examined the data from the crimes and realized that several of the items stolen were portable digital music players. Knowing that these items are typically pawned off, they searched pawn shop records and arrested a suspect, who they’ve identified as Joseph Kwon Spoerl, 19, of Fountain.

Detectives also identified additional cases in the Colorado Center area of unincorporated El Paso County.

When Spoerl’s home was searched, Fountain police say they found several additional pieces of evidence linking him to the crimes.

Due to the sheer number of cases and property involved, police say it will take some time to link each item to its owner. Officers will contact property owners when the items can all be identified and made ready for release.

Anyone with additional information related to these offenses are encouraged to call the Fountain Police Department at 382-8555. Police also remind everyone to keep their car doors locked, keep valuables out of sight and maintain records of the serial numbers for all valuable items.

Spoerl faces multiple felony counts of trespass. Additional charges are expected.
