Two juveniles are under arrest for setting a fire that destroyed new playground equipment at Martinez Elementary School.

The playground, at 6460 Vickers Drive, was burning when firefighters arrived at 9:09 p.m. on April 25. Although it was extinguished quickly, the flames caused significant damage to the playground.

The playground was erected less than a year ago. After the fire, it was boarded up to prevent children from playing on it.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department says a tip provided through the Safe 2 Tell program led to the arrest of two juveniles for the arson. Because of their age, information about the suspects was not released.

The destruction is tough for students, staff and parents, who spent five years fundraising to pay for the new equipment.

“It's just a little disheartening to see that in just one night all that work is just destroyed and we don't know when it's going to be fixed or how long it's going to take,” parent Cinnamon Moore said.

The damage to the equipment was estimated at $6,200.
