DA: Homicide Outside Bar Justified As Self Defense

No charges will be filed in connection with a death outside a Colorado Springs bar in November. The District Attorney says it was justified as self-defense.

Police were called to the parking lot of Hondo's Sports Bar on the 4600 block of Centennial Blvd. around 2:11 a.m. on November 26 because of a reported fight. As the crowd broke up, officers spotted William Joshua Landrum lying on the ground, his head and face bleeding extensively.

Landrum was taken to Penrose Hospital where he later died.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, several fights broke out in the parking lot that night, including one near the bar’s front entrance. This altercation involved Nicholas Blunt and other men, possibly including Landrum.

The DA found that Blunt tried to run from the fight, but was chased by ten or eleven other people. He picked up a rock as he was running away and threw it. They say Blunt never intended to kill anyone or expected that anyone would die.

Physical evidence and surveillance video supports Blunt’s story, the DA says. Additionally, Blunt was not impaired by alcohol.

Landrum, however, had been drinking at Hondo’s and had a blood alcohol level at twice the legal limit.

The DA says that under state law, a person can use physical force upon another person to defend himself and may use the degree of force that he reasonably believes to be necessary for that purpose.
