Two hit-and-runs in one night for one unlucky driver early Sunday morning, whose vehicle was struck twice in two separate incidents.
Police have arrested the man allegedly involved with the second hit-and-run, but are still searching for the suspect involved in the first.
According to police, the victim's vehicle was first struck by a Ford Expedition as it backed out of a parking space at the Pale Horse bar, on the 200 block on North Union. As the driver fled the scene, he struck another vehicle, this time a tow truck belonging to Pinky's Towing. The driver then began driving towards the area of Bijou and Chelton, knocking over a light pole on Union in the process.
The owner of Pinky's Towing, Anthony Vargas, was in the tow truck, waiting to pick up his cousin who works at the bar. Vargas safely followed the driver at a distance. He said, as a guess, the driver sped down Bijou at close to 100 MPH.
Police said the driver eventually crashed into a building on the 200 block of North Chelton, causing a modest amount of damage to the building and rendering his vehicle undrivable. He took off running through the nearby Walmart parking lot, successfully eluding the officers searching for him in the area.
"(The crash) was hard, I was amazed that he even jumped out of the car and took off running as hard as he hit, and he had to hit hard, he hit us really really hard and hit the light pole and everything else. I was just amazed that he was able to jump out and run you know," Vargas said.
Details on the suspect are limited at this time; police said he was a Hispanic man, wearing a white sweatshirt with a large design at the time of the incident. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call police, or call Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP to remain anonymous.
Shortly thereafter, the original victim in the first hit-and-run, still parked at Pale Horse, was struck again by a red truck. The driver, identified as 30-year-old Miguel Vasquez, allegedly tried to drive off, but was caught two blocks away by officers still in the area investigating the first incident.
Vasquez was arrested on hit-and-run and DUI charges.
