A tattoo was the crucial link police used to identify a man accused of carjacking as a suspect in at least four liquor store robberies. Court documents have now revealed the details of those crimes.

Brett Harris, 33, was arrested on July 12 after he reportedly carjacked a vehicle parked outside a Little Ceasar's restaurant. Investigators tell 11 News the suspect tried to outrun police in the stolen car, but cops caught up with him.

According to court documents, a tattoo on Harris' arm matched one seen on a robbery suspect in surveillance video. From there, police connected him to at least three other robberies.

"I hope he sits in jail for a long time," Ben Johnson, manager of Lake Liquors, said. "That man needs to learn some victim empathy. He has no idea how bad he screwed up some of the employees heads."

The first of the four robberies occurred on January 21. According to the affidavit written by an officer assigned to the violent crimes robbery unit, Harris was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun. He brandished the weapon as he walked into the Lake Liquors store at 501 S. Union Blvd. and demanded Johnson open both of the registers. From inside, Harris allegedly took $150.

The next robbery described in the document occurred two days later at JW Liquors at 319 S. Hancock Ave. The clerk also described a similar suspect carrying a black semi-automatic handgun who demanded the register be opened. This time, Harris allegedly got $100.

About two months later, on March 13, Harris is accused of robbing Lake Liquors once again. A different clerk was on duty, but they described a similar suspect who demanded the registers be opened. This time, the affidavit alleges Harris was carrying a silver revolver and got away with about $300.

On March 30, the same store was robbed for a third time. This time, the clerk and others inside refused to cooperate. The court document says Harris tried to take the registers, but wasn’t able to get away with anything. In this case, the weapon described was a black revolver.

The robbery at the JW Liquors provided investigating officers with a surveillance video that showed a tattoo of a woman in high heel shoes next to a cursive word. After Harris was arrested for the carjacking, officers discovered that tattoo on his arm.

Based on the similarities of all the robberies and the proximity of Harris’ home to both liquor stores, police believe he is responsible for all four robberies. The affidavit also reports he is suspected in other robberies within Colorado Springs, but doesn’t detail which ones.
