An antique 1800-era jail cell was stolen from the Gold Hill Mesa Subdivision in March. Police say four suspects cut the historic cell into pieces and sold it as scrap.

The one-man jail cell was used in Old Colorado City around the time gold-milling was getting started in Colorado Springs. It was believed to be the last remaining cell of its type in the world.

Colorado Springs police say they’ve identified four suspects in the theft and destruction of the historic cell. Charles McNew, 27, and Joshua Vaughn, 23, are already under arrest and charged with felony theft. Officers are still looking for Jessica Ramsey, 23, and Kenneth Hanowell, 22.

McNew and Vaughn were both on probation at the time of the theft. McNew was serving eight years of probation for the theft of street light wire in 2011 and Vaughn was serving two years for a 2011 burglary of copper and other electrical components from the former Express Inn.
