Aurora police are calling the attempted kidnapping of an 8-year-old girl their top priority, and are offering their largest reward ever for the capture of the suspect.

Aurora police have doubled the reward, increasing it to $20,000 Tuesday.

Early Monday morning, police say a man climbed into the child's bedroom window and took her.

The little girl began screaming, waking her father up. He raced outside and saw his daughter running back towards him from an alley. It's unclear how she got away.

Police say the suspect was able to get inside by removing the window screen on the bedroom window, then opening the unlocked window. The home is a single-story house.

Authorities told sister station KCNC that at this time, the attempted kidnapping appears random. There are no signs that indicate the family was targeted.

“We’re treating this matter extremely seriously,” Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates told KCNC. “We think there’s a predator out there and he has to be stopped and he has to be caught.”

The suspect is described as a white man with blond hair. He was wearing a black winter jacket and smelled like cigarette smoke. He may have gotten away in a gray or silver, newer BMW.

The attempted abduction happened on the 1600 block of Hanover Drive in Aurora.

Police are offering a $20,000 reward for any information that can lead to an arrest. If you have any information that can help police, you are asked to call Detective Christine Hurley at 303-739-6113 or Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP. If you call Crime Stoppers, you do not have to identify yourself.
