WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal consumer safety officials are filing a complaint against a second company over desktop magnet toys for adults that pose a danger to children and teenagers.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is targeting Zen Magnets -- a company that sells the tiny but powerful magnets that can be molded into different shapes.
The commission says teens are using the magnets to mimic tongue, lip or cheek piercings. If accidentally swallowed, the magnets can pinch intestinal walls, leading to infection or even death.
The agency wants to stop the sale of the desktop toy magnets entirely. Other companies have agreed. But Zen Magnets and the company Maxfield and Oberton, which markets "Buckeyballs," are challenging the complaints. Zen says its product has never injured anyone. A law judge will hear the complaints.
