A federal appeals court in San Francisco has ruled that the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance is constitutional.

In a 2-1 ruling, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel rejected arguments by Sacramento atheist Michael Newdow that the phrase violates the separation between church and state.

Newdow's previous lawsuit against the pledge in public schools reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 2004. But the high court said he didn't have the legal standing to make the challenge on behalf of his daughter.

So Newdow, who is a doctor and lawyer, filed a similar challenge on behalf of other parents who objected to their children being required to recite "under God."

In a separate ruling Thursday, the appeals court also upheld the use of the phrase "In God We Trust" on coins and currency.

Sorry that I'm late to the party on this topic. Recently moved to Colorado. I find it very ironic that people get upset about the Pledge being changed (either words added or taken out). The Pledge has been changed 3-4 times since it was written in 1892. The words "under god" were not added until 1954 (62 years after being written). Imagine generations of Americans not saying those two words during the Pledge. Does it really make a difference to have those two words added in? At the same time, does it make a difference leaving them in today? Not really. If its so bad, why even say the Pledge at all? Its been changed before and will be changed again. Oh and Ryan, regarding your comment...maybe no one disputed your comment here because religious uncertainty seems to be a generally understood concept. That's why it is called a "belief system" including Atheism. My guess is that Mr. X is not a true Atheist and was more interested in leaving a hateful religous based statement.

I just wanted to point out that yet again 2 weeks later my comments never seem to get disputed on any post that I do. Surely I'm not always right...

@ Mr x: Correct me if I'm wrong by I thought Atheism has the same kind of certainty that other religions have. Rather, mine is I don't know and neither do you.
