There is still no word on a cause for the Cobblestone Ridge fire which destroyed a group of apartment units this weekend. Sunday, some tenants were able to return to their homes.

The fire started Saturday morning at the Cobblestone Ridge apartments near Cheyenne Meadows Road on the south side of Colorado Springs.

The fire severely damaged up to eight units. Eight other units were also evacuated in the same building, right next to where the fire was.

"I heard a girl screaming… and looked out the window,” said Amanda Meredith. “I saw all these people and fire trucks."

Amanda and her husband Wade woke up to a lot of commotion just after 2:00 a.m. Saturday. "There was a guy yelling, fire! fire!, going all crazy," said Wade Meredith.

When the couple evacuated they were faced with bright orange flames, and heavy black smoke. "[Its] pretty depressing knowing you ain't got no where to stay," said Wade.

The Meredith's spent their weekend in a motel, they returned home Sunday afternoon. It was more than a day after the fire destroyed half of their building. "I opened up the doors and let it vent out in here, it was pretty smoky still," said Wade. "We're just lucky, we're happy to be home and our stuff is here."

At least half a dozen families are still receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

As for the Merediths, they tell 11 News, since the fire they have increased their renters insurance. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
