Fort Carson leader, Lt. Col. Steve Wollman, talked to reporters in the aftermath of the shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas.

Lt. Col. Wollman wouldn't comment on specifics of any security measures Fort Carson may have taken upon learning of the violence in Texas, but he said security was their number one priority.

"There was an analysis done by our appropriate law enforcement here, recommendations were made to the change of command and prudent measures are in place at this time," Wollman said.

Thousands of soldiers from Fort Hood were recently re-assigned to Fort Carson. Col. Wollman says another priority is making sure anyone who needs help dealing with the tragedy gets it.

"We ask any family member who is feeling a stress from this incident to take advantage of the behavioral health programs that we have here at Fort Carson," Wollman said.

Many of us in the civilian community might wonder why soldiers didn't use their weapons to stop the gunman? Col. Wollman says being armed is part of a soldier's job, but at Fort Carson loaded weapons are only carried in certain places.

"It is uncommon for them to be carried on to what I would call main post. They are used on firing ranges, training ranges on post," Wollman said.

He says the news of the shooting spread rapidly through the Fort Carson community.

"You hear people talking," Wollman said, "We're one big family. It affects each and every one of us. Any loss to one is a tragic loss for all of us."
