Mormon church leaders are asking California members to amend the state's constitution to ban same-sex marriages.

The ballot measure defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

A June 20th letter sent to Mormon congregation bishops calls upon Mormons to donate "means and time" to the ballot measure. The letter is signed by church president Thomas S. Monson and his two top counselors.

A note on the letter says it should be read during church services June 29th, but it was published on several Internet Web sites Saturday.

Scott Trotter, a spokesman for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, says the letter is authentic. Trotter declined to comment further, saying the letter states the church's reasons for getting involved.

Sable-The separation of church and state issue prohibits the government from establishing a religion. Religious principals can and in some cases do coincide with the law, for instance many think that it is a sin to steal, and it is also harmful to society therefore it is also a crime. Unfortunately laws can infringe on religious beliefs, and the state will try to force religious groups to allow gay marriage and adoptions against their beliefs. We have every right to shape our society with prinicipals that are good for society. The legislature did not confront the issue, 4 judges overturned the WILL OF THE PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA, so an amendment will be necessary. The majority of Calfornians do not want gay marriage. db-The Mormon church, more correctly called the LDS church, does not allow polygamy. These offshoots are no more "Mormons" than Protestants are Catholic.

Due to the "Separation of Church & State" principle, the Church of LDS really has no business telling people outside of its congregation how to lead their lives - and that includes same-sex couples. Personally, I don't think any religious leader has any business getting involved in politics or legislation. They should concern themselves with their own congregation, not with anyone else. That includes all religious leaders, no matter what denomination or religion they represent. As for California, "Hooray!" to the state legislature there for being brave enough to confront the issue and decide that "separate is not equal" - what is good enough for straight couples should be good enough for gay couples, too.

I agree with stunned. Perhaps the mormon church should worry a bit more about the fundamentalist groups within their own church who think it is okay to take a 14 year old child as a third wife.
