The director of volunteers for the Democratic National Convention in Denver has resigned, saying she wasn't "empowered" to do her job.

Sondra Williams stepped down June 7. She declined to elaborate on her reasons, saying she doesn't want to criticize the host committee.

The committee is coping with fundraising problems. It reported this week it is $11.6 short its $40.6 million goal.

Williams says her proposal for a volunteer-appreciation party at the Denver Zoo was turned down because of costs. Host committee spokesman Chris Lopez says other plans are under consideration.

Lopez says Williams set up the volunteer program well and her departure shouldn't hurt it. He says two people who worked with her will be able to fill the gap.
