Denver police are investigating a shooting involving a state parole officer and a man who was sent to the hospital with critical injuries.

Police say the shooting occurred at a Denver home about 9 p.m. Tuesday. Lieutenant Ron Saunier says the parole officer notified authorities himself that he had shot someone.

It's unclear whether the person who was shot was on parole, or what prompted the shooting.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson says a weapon was recovered inside the home, but it's not known whether the person who was shot was brandishing it.

The parole officer is being interviewed.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Katherine Sanguinetti says Denver police will take the lead in the investigation, but says the DOC will follow up.
