Barack Obama's campaign is considering a suggestion from John McCain's campaign for the two presidential hopefuls to participate in joint town meetings and debates this summer.

Asked about the idea on "Fox News Sunday," Obama's chief strategist David Axelrod said it was being considered "very seriously."

Axelrod says with the country at war and the economy "in turmoil," this is "the most significant election" the country has faced in a long time. He adds that the people "deserve a serious discourse" that shouldn't be limited to three "very regimented debates."

John McCain is the expected Republican presidential nominee, while Obama is closing in on the Democratic nod.

McCain's aides say they'll wait to discuss the details until they have an official opponent.
