The University of Colorado is weighing a contract with a company that allows universities to offer free online courses that are available to hundreds of thousands of students worldwide.

CU spokesman Ken McConnellogue tells The Daily Camera the university will decide sometime in February whether to sign a contract with Coursera, which offers massive open online courses, or MOOCs. The classes would be produced by professors at the Boulder campus.

McConnellogue says he can't release details because the university is still negotiating with the company.

Coursera says its site has reached more than 2 million students across the globe, though some sign up and don't completely follow through with the courses.

The American Council on Education announced earlier this month that it will evaluate MOOCs for possible college credit.
