Extended Holiday Season - (Stacia Naquin)

So you made it through the Thanksgiving feasts and Grandma’s Christmas cookies. You navigated your way through the buffet at holiday parties and New Year’s champagne. You set new goals for yourself in 2013. The great season of temptation should be over, right?

We forget about the EXTENDED Holiday Season and nutritional mine fields ahead that could derail your plans for a healthier you. Starting with what greeted me in the newsroom today…

Girl Scout Cookies – they officially go on sale January 27th. Not only are the cookies delicious, you’re also faced with the adorable scouts themselves who are definitely working towards something bigger. As the cookie box says: “Selling Girl Scout Cookies helps girls with goal setting, money management, people skills…” and then some. And did I mention the cookies are delicious?

Super Bowl Sunday – the Ravens and the 49ers face off on KKTV on February 3rd. I don’t really care who wins. I’m excited for Beyonce’s half-time show and the commercials. I’m also REALLY excited about Buffalo wings, nachos, Chex mix, and the list goes on. Super Bowl Sunday is the best of the worst, when it comes to food. And there’s no sense in denying yourself! Enjoy it!

Valentine’s Day – nothing says “I love you” like a big ol’ box of chocolates. Plus, chocolate is good for your heart, right? Better give/eat a bunch! Obviously, we know that’s not really the case. Most of the chocolate in those heart-shaped boxes isn’t the best for us. But it sure is fun to give/eat. And conversation hearts are pure sugar. But they’re also pure fun.

As with ANY part of the holiday season, the best advice is moderation. And we KNOW that. But then sometimes forget in the moment. You don’t want to miss out on the fun. But you don’t want to derail your health/fitness goals either.

So instead of 9 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies, I’ll order 3. And on Super Bowl Sunday, I’ll just eat one plate of food instead of 3. Then, on Valentine’s Day I’ll just have a chocolate or two, instead of the entire box. Like I said – moderation. It’s my plan to get through the extended holiday season.
