They share an unbreakable bond, and this week they're back on common ground. Some soldiers from the Republic of Latvia are special guests this week of their Ft. Carson counterparts.
Their reunion is months in the making and linked to a powerful story of teamwork and loss.
Soldiers with the 4th Brigade Combat Team came under one of the most deadly single attacks on U.S. forces while they were in Afghanistan late last year.
Enemy fighters fired from three sides during the attack on the isolated outpost.
Eight 4BCT soldiers did not survive that battle, but they were not alone. The Latvian troops fought alongside them.
The warriors were reunited Tuesday, arriving at Denver International Airport, where they were met by Ft. Carson soldiers including Sergeant Eric Harder.
"We worked, like everyday together, on every mission because we took Afghan Army out with us and [the Latvians] were liaisons for the Afghan Army, so we worked with them to work with ANA," Harder said.
Harder told 11 News his friends made it safely to Colorado and rode back to Colorado Springs through Tuesday night’s storms.
The Latvian soldiers and their families will spend the rest of the week here.
