A former Marine accused of faking his disappearance to avoid returning to his unit has been deemed competent to stand trial.

Lance Hering staged his disappearance in 2006 and eluded authorities for more than two years before turning up in the Pacific Northwest.

Boulder County Court Judge John F. Stavely ruled Friday that Hering will stand trial on false reporting charges on September 29.

Hering was discharged from the Marines in December.

Hering, a lance corporal and Iraq war veteran, was on leave from Camp Pendleton, California, when he disappeared in 2006.

Hering has said he suffered post-traumatic stress disorder.

If Herring is truly suffering from PTSD, I'm sorry and I hope he gets the help he deserves. BUT, I believe that it is highly unusual for PTSD sufferers to plot out a meticulously detailed strategy to disappear and start a new life while AWOL. Shame. Shame. Shame. There are too many service people and their families who are dealing with real PTSD. To claim it because he changed his mind about honoring his obligation to serve is wrong at every level.
