A Chinook helicopter from Buckley Air Force Base has successfully recovered the body of a missing Fort Carson soldier.

Officials say the search began Monday after the soldier did not show up for work and his car was found on top of Pikes Peak.

Officials say the soldier, a 23-year-old West Point graduate, was rock climbing and fell to his death. His body was discovered in an area called the Bottomless Pit, a rugged terrain. Media has been asked not to release his name until Fort Carson officials confirm his death.

El Paso County Search and Rescue began searching on top of Pikes Peak Monday night but the search was called off due to weather conditions. That search resumed Tuesday morning with a ground crew and a Blackhawk flying overhead.

El Paso County Search and Rescue officials say because of the rough terrain of the area, a Chinook helicopter from Buckley Air Force Base was called in to recover the body.

Is anyone not curious why a soldier would go climbing alone, besides being educated, fit and strong? Prayers being said for his family and true friends.

May I express my thanks to and appreciation for Andy's friends, his unit, El Paso County Search and Rescue, and the Army staff and family at Fort Carson during this difficult and dangerous recovery. After four years at the Academy and a year of additional training, this is such an untimely sacrifice. Andy was my hope and joy for family and nation. He will be greatly missed. RIP. Sorry to all his family members. One thing I did notice on this same article on the KRDO website is that the writer cared more about the extensive rescue efforts instead of the loss of life. Yes the rescue was dangerous- but thats also part of their job. Hats off to the soldier and as far as KRDO, just what were you thinking when you wrote that??? (I know you guys read this website too)

We were up there today with a field trip of grade school children. The search and rescue teams were cautious about their answers with the kids. It was apparent to the adults that this lost person wasn't coming home alive. So sorry to hear he did indeed die. We are grateful for those who choose to risk their own lives to find the lost.

This is so sad, my condolences go out to the family. I wonder if it was a case of altitude sickness and then having to deal with rough terrain that caused this? Im from MA and when I was in that area back over the summer, I too was having issues with trying to keep my head on straight and focused.
