A Chinook helicopter from Buckley Air Force Base has successfully recovered the body of a missing Fort Carson soldier.
Officials say the search began Monday after the soldier did not show up for work and his car was found on top of Pikes Peak.
Officials say the soldier, a 23-year-old West Point graduate, was rock climbing and fell to his death. His body was discovered in an area called the Bottomless Pit, a rugged terrain. Media has been asked not to release his name until Fort Carson officials confirm his death.
El Paso County Search and Rescue began searching on top of Pikes Peak Monday night but the search was called off due to weather conditions. That search resumed Tuesday morning with a ground crew and a Blackhawk flying overhead.
El Paso County Search and Rescue officials say because of the rough terrain of the area, a Chinook helicopter from Buckley Air Force Base was called in to recover the body.
